GENERAL ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT COURSE

Course No 2252

1. Aim of the Course. The aim of the General Engineering Management course is to provide formal Management Training for Chief Technicians in the trades of Gen Tech E, Gen Tech GSE and Gen Tech WS who are to be promoted to Gen Tech Flight Sergeant in Trade Group 5. Specifically:

a. To enhance and expand the skills, procedures and practices of the General Technician trade at Flight Sergeant level.

b. To enhance and expand the theoretical knowledge required for the efficient performance of their duties in the trade of General Technician.

c. To enable them to effectively manage all ground trades within a general engineering environment.

2. Summary of Training Requirements.

a. General. The requirement is to provide training for General Technicians at Flight Sergeant level in Quality Assurance, Health and Safety at Work, General Engineering management responsibilities, control of resources, and engineering administration policy and procedures in accordance with Training Objectives issued by LPS1b.

b. Student Assessment. Simulated injects are implemented throughout the training course and are designed to check the performance of the student. Continuous assessment is used in place of a formal examination.

c. Attitudinal Goals. The emphasis of the course is on the development of the individual’s qualities of management and supervision which he will be expected to display as a Flight Sergeant. Although the course provides training in the Skills and Knowledge at Flight Sergeant level it is designed to promote an awareness of, and favourable attitudes toward the General Engineering responsibilities. The instructor is to impart the following attitudinal goals throughout the duration of the course. In particular the student should:

(1) Value their role as a General Technician and continually strive to carry out all their duties proficiently.

(2) Constantly seek to broaden their personal horizons.

(3) Seek to instil the highest standards of professionalism in their work.

(4) Seek to improve current practices and standards by applying sound supervisory management techniques and maintaining an awareness of trade trends and developments within the Service.

(5) Recognise that General Engineering has a major part to play in the efficient operation of a unit.

(6) Strive to achieve efficient and effective supervisory management in order to reduce resource costs.

3. Eligibility. The course is restricted to Chief Technicians in Trade Group 5 who are selected for promotion to Flight Sergeant and have successfully completed the Advanced Management and Leadership Course at RAF Halton. All RAF nominations through PMA 6B(1). Non-RAF through Business Development Officer

4. Duration of the Course. The duration of the course is to be no longer than 15 working days however, dependant on the experience and trade mix of the students, DTMT has the authority to condense the course to 12 working days.
