CHARGEHAND TRADEMANAGEMENT TRAINING

1. Aim of the Course. The aim of the Chargehand (CH) Trade Management Training (TMT) course is to train selected personnel in the management aspects of the ground engineering trades, i.e. Painter & Finisher, Fitter Turner, Motor Transport Technician, Electrician Technician, Ground Support Equipment Fitter, Metal Worker and Carpenter. Specifically, the course aims to:

a. Define the engineering and safety regulations to be observed by supervisors and their subordinates.

b. Consider methods of supervision.

c. Provide the opportunity to practice supervision.

d. Encourage the student to recognise the wider sphere of their responsibilities particularly with regard to:

(1) Communication.

(2) Management.

(3) Subordinates.

(4) Equipment in an engineering environment.

2. Summary of Training Requirement.

a. General. On completion of training, the trained person will possess the basic skills and knowledge which will enable them to carry out the duties of a CH. He/she will have a broad knowledge of the role and responsibilities associated with their grade and a detailed knowledge of the subjects covered in the Training Objectives (TOs).

b. Health and Safety at Work and Environmental Protection. The person under training is to observe the statutory requirements of all Health and Safety at Work (HSW) and Environmental Protection (EP) legislation relevant to the course. All specific precautions and responsibilities are included in the Instructional Specification (IS) for the syllabus.

c. Student Assessment. Continuous assessment is used in place of formal examination; this is achieved by monitoring student performance during the syndicate exercises dispersed throughout the course.

d. Attitudinal Goals. The emphasis of the course is the development of the individual’s supervisory ability relevant to their CH grade. The course is designed to promote an awareness of, and favourable attitudes toward the general supervisory responsibilities of a CH. In particular, the student should:

(1) Value their role as a trade supervisor and continually strive to carry out all their duties proficiently.

(2) Constantly seek to broaden their personal horizons.

(3) Seek to instil the highest standards of professionalism in their work.

(4) Seek to improve current practices and standards by applying sound supervisory techniques and maintaining an awareness of trade trends and developments within the MOD.

(5) Recognise that their trade has a major part to play in the efficient operation of a unit.

(6) Strive to achieve efficient and effective supervision in order to reduce resource costs.

3. Eligibility. Personnel selected for the course will be restricted to those who have been selected for promotion, or have recently been promoted, to CH.
