  Computer Assisted Tuning

for ‘Perfect’ performance and identical filters every time

For those filters that do not need the ‘NO Tuners’ design approach we are using the latest software

technology to link the design computers to the test equipment so that we can now tune filters to

precisely match the original computer prediction, see graphs below.

Left hand graph is a screen shot of the computer software during tuning showing the computer predicted

filter performance as the dotted traces and the real time data from the test equipment as the solid traces.

(All traces on 10 dB per division)

The filter is an 11 section 4 GHz interdigital filter designed for a nominal 26 dB return loss, the right

hand graph shows the final plot of the real filter on the test equipment showing over 25 dB return loss

over the complete passband. (Return loss plot on 5 dB per division)

Major recent investment in our design software leads to

'NO Tuners' designs

We have just completed a major upgrade program on our suite of filter design software and production methods

so that we now have the capability of designing and manufacturing filters without any tuning screws

These filters are ideal for applications needing high power, low loss, small waveguide sizes, or mass production

..A selection of ‘NO tuners’ filters can be found via our Datasheets and Products page

A typical example is an untuned bandpass filter in WG 23 (WF 400, WR22) at 44 GHz.

It was measured within 45 MHz of designed centre frequency, and within 1 dB on rejection points.

This is less than 0.1% total error,

this was allowed for in the design so the centre frequency error did not affect the ability of the filter

to fully meet the customers specification

Relating this to cavity length equates to better than 3 micron accuracy

of the sum of design and manufacturing tolerances.

The new improvements in the software covers bandpass, highpass, lowpass and notch filters, diplexers,

couplers, Magic-T's and also ridged waveguide for dual band systems.

'Right first time designs' = No prototypes

Huge benefits to our customers in cost savings and fast delivery timescales

Using their years of filter expertise A1 Microwave have written a complete suite of filter design software

so that for most standard products we do not waste time and effort making prototypes.

Such is our trust in our software that even for large production orders we go straight from the initial design

drawings into full production without manufacturing or testing any prototypes.
