Thematic Mapping

Thematic mapping colour codes areas (or points) on a map enabling the user to visualise how values vary across a region. Apogee Data Consulting uses a range of Ordnance Survey products to produce these maps for a range of clients. The areas to be colour coded can be anything from postcodes to electoral wards. Postcode data itself can range from unit postcodes (e.g. TN2 3JU) up to postcode areas (e.g. TN). For more information on postcode geography in the UK please click here.

The map below is a sample from a thematic map that uses postcode areas as the basis for presenting the information. The different colours represent different values for each region, for example this might be population density where the red areas are areas of high population density and the white areas have low population density.

Thematic maps can also be created from point data either by varying the colour of the points to represent different values or qualities or actually changing the symbols themselves. Please see the images below as examples.

The datasets that can be placed in a thematic map are numerous. If your organisation has data that is associated with a particular region or location then a thematic map could be created. These maps are fantastic tools when presenting your company's information, whether that be your sales figures or number of customers. For more information on thematic maps or to discuss your individual requirements please complete our feedback form. A GIS Consultant will get back to you shortly.
