Reset the Auto Number Field in Access
Ever wished you could reset the auto number field in access and get rid of all those gaps? Microsoft certainly has not come up with a solution but we have. First make a back up of the database to ensure against any mistakes. Now copy the table that has the irregular number order, call the new table the same as the original and add the number 1 to the end of the file name. Open the copied table and delete the row containing the auto number, close the table saving the changes. Next delete the original table clicking on yes to any warnings that follow. Re-opening the copied table and insert a row, call the field name and field type the same as the original and re-instate the primary key. Finally remove the number 1 you added to the table name and restore all links in the relationship table. The table should now be in a sequential order.

If you are prompted to enter a parameter value for the trim function while previewing a mailing label report
When you open an Access 2000 database that has been originally built in an earlier version and then converted to 2000 there are a few things that you need to be aware of. The parameter value dialog box relating to the trim function when opening a report is one of these.
The cause of this problem is a missing reference that is necessary in earlier Access versions that is not in Access 2000.
The cure is very simple:
- Open your database, select the report with the problem and open it in design view.
- On the View Menu click the code option.
- The Visual Basic editor will now open, click on the Tools Menu then select References .
- The References dialog box should now be open, deselect any options that begin with the word “Missing” and then click OK . In the example below the activeX control needs deselecting.
- On the File Menu , click Save and then File Menu again, and select Close and return to Access.
- The error messages in the report should have now all disappeared, check the details by pressing the Print Preview button on the standard toolbar.
