Race report - Wednesday 16 May 2007 Despite the rain and relatively light conditions, again there was a good turnout on Wednesday, with two F15s, two lasers and a Pico on the water. In the 15s, Clive sailed with Fiona and believe it or not, Ali sailed with Tony. A pairing which had the potential to provide either a fantastic synergy or a disastrous clash of egos, bit like Dennis Connor and Russell Coutts sailing on the same boat (only with less talent). Disappointingly neither happened, and I believe they were still on speaking terms at the end of the evening. We had time for 3 x 4 lap races, the first two of which were useful for learning the course, particularly as everybody started on the wrong side of the committee boat in the first race. Further confusion was caused by the number of green buoys that have sprung up in the lagoon this year. The last race, traditionally the one that counts towards the series, was an extremely close affair, on the water at least. While the 15s definitely had a speed advantage, the Lasers were able to turn a bit faster and point higher, and on the last run down to the line I had to resort to trying to run Tony and Ali off the course. This was only partially successful as it allowed Clive to sneak up the inside and cross the line a second ahead.... Fortunately the handicap was in my favour. Alex also had a good race finishing second on handicap, and moves to the top of the Laser series. Tony leads the F15 series, and despite coming last in a Pico, Guy retains the club championship lead, but with a discard coming up this may all change next week. Watch this space........
