Applications for the post of Clerk of the Council
The Clerk is responsible not only for the day-to-day administration of the Council’s affairs and the management of its small group of employees, but also for helping to shape the future of a forward-looking and dynamic Council made up of 17 elected representatives from three, very different electoral wards.
The post will suit those with strong administrative skills, including the control of our finances, together with effective management and problem-solving abilities. Individuals who demand high standards from themselves and others; and who enjoy meeting and working with people to bring about change that will improve the lives of residents. What does a Clerk do?
The post-holder will work a nominal 37 hour week at the council’s offices in Tylers Green but will also need to attend about 30 evening meetings a year of the council or its committees and working groups - usually from 7pm to 10pm on either a Tuesday or Thursday.
The Clerk acts as the council’s Proper Officer implementing the decisions of the Council and also as its Responsible Financial Officer, managing our budgets and control systems as laid down both by statute and by the Council.
The post will appeal to those who have a background in local government or the public services, but applications are encouraged from those with experience in the service sector of private industry. The successful applicant will want and will be required to obtain the Certificate in Local Government Administration (CiLCA), which should hold no fears for those with an interest in their work.
Salary will be in the range of £28,000 to £33,000 a year depending upon qualifications and experience; four weeks holiday a year - rising to five weeks – and the council will contribute towards an approved pension scheme.
