Tissington & High Peak Trail's, Derbyshire

Tissington & High Peak trail pictures, I must have been to this trail at least 10 times now over the last couple of years and it never gets boring. Although I don't go as often as I first did, but its still an enjoyable ride out in the country on a safe & quiet track away from the roads. Even if you don't have a bike, you can always drive there and hire a bike from hire centres at Ashbourne, Parsley Hay and High Peak (near to Matlock Bath).

Picture taken at the small village of Tissington, outside Tissington Hall. They have a tradition each year called 'Well Dressing', which goes back a long way to the days when the area survived the plague or pox (I can't remember which exactly) through having a clean & healthy water supply.

Picture taken outside the shop at High Peak. Inside the shop are several gifts & sweets, ice cream etc - and suprisingly a visitors video which gives you a history of the railway line there before it was converted into a bike trail. One memorable point was watching this video with my mate Rob, and the sight of us tittering to ourselves, trying not to burst out into childish laughter in front of a couple of families and their small children at the mention on the video of 'leather thongs'!! Hehe.

Another scenic shot of me with the rolling hills behind me. I think behind the camera person is an ancient viking burial ground, or a burial ground from another era, I can't remember. Excellent riding anyway... I think I've done both sides of the 'V' shaped trail about 3 times now - totalling up a 50 mile bike ride. Sounds like it might be easy on a converted railway line, but it isn't! From the start at Ashbourne all the way up to Parsely Hay there is a definate slight incline all the way up there (13.5 miles). Makes for interesting riding on the way back though, averaging 20mph & quietly zipping past all the walkers with a fright! ;o)

These next three pictures were taken by someone else on the net who has previously been on this ride and reported on others around the area. Click here to read the review of the rides on his page..

Picture taken over one of the most impressive areas on the way from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, looking westwards over Dovedale.

Picture taken of the old signal box at Hartington - about 1.5 miles away from Parsley Hay. One of the few remaining peices of evidence that the trail was actually a railway line in times gone by.

Just a really good example of the trail you would expect to see on a glorious hot summers day - superb!
