Club Motto

The clubs motto, ‘A crown that will last for ever’ is taken from the Bible, from the first letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the Christian church in Corinth. Paul said this;

‘Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever’. (1 Corinthians 9 v 25).

Paul often uses sporting examples to illustrate the good news message of Jesus. Here he compares life to running a race and winning a prize.

We know as athletes that success only follows hard work. No runner would just turn up to compete in a marathon without having spent months in training. Similarly, no rugby team expects to do the business week in week out, without many hours spent on the training paddock. Often it is this dedication which makes the taste of success all the sweeter.

However, trophies, titles and awards don’t last long – the greatest teams, players and athletes are soon replaced and their former glories soon forgotten. The crown soon slips! But God offers us something that will not fade or diminish. Paul tells of this in another letter he wrote, to the church in Rome;

‘… the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’. (Romans 6 v 23)

The aim of the Corinthians RFC is not to be the best rugby team in the world (although when we play, we will try to be the best team we can possibly be!). Our aim is to tell others of the good news of Jesus, as it is this good news that is a crown that will not diminish, but will last for ever.
