EPILEPSY
Clinical
Epilepsy affects 1 in 200 of the population.
Between 0.8 -1.2% of children and 0.3 - 0.7% of adults
have recurrent seizures with 3% of the population having
at least one seizure during their life. For the majority
of people, lifelong treatment is necessary. 10-20% of patients
have resistant seizures, despite trying several of the
currently available medications in combination. The most
significant clinical problem for the majority of patients,
however, is side effects. The two most commonly prescribed
drugs, sodium valproate and carbamazepine, are effective
at controlling seizures, but at the frequent expense of
fatigue, weight gain and dizziness.
There are two major needs in the epilepsy
market:
• monotherapeutic drugs with a better side effect profile;
• more potent add-on drugs to treat the patients with difficult to control
epilepsy.

DanioLabs approach
DanioLabs is identifying novel drug targets which
suppress seizure initiation and propagation, as well as
novel anti-epileptic compounds. Particular consideration
is being given to their side effect profile, as well as
their additive and synergistic effects with the established
therapies.
