Litter 3 May 2009

First year at their new homes

I don't really know where the time has gone, but hopefully your pups have filled it for you!

Saffi a year on.

Four pups at 10 months and Saffi nearest the camera.

Week 9

The litter reduced in number as a lot of the pups have gone to their real homes this week. We are down to 3 now and it will be zero soon. The house is very quite. The only excitment is that Brindy has started producing milk and taken over the creche to raise a litter of squeaky toys. I wish I made this stuff up :-) Hopefully she will get back to 'normal' when the squeaky toys also go to their 'forever homes'.

...And you can dig in it and the hole is self-filling !!

Thanks for that.....

Okay! Lets call it a draw.

Week 8

The interaction between the pups, the other dogs and the people is getting more sophisticated. A month ago, the morning priority was the next meal, then it became looking for Jimmy Riddle in the garden. Then Jimmy was forgotten in favour of just getting out. Now the priority is to welcome (aka mob) the "human beans" first.

As you can see in some of the photos even eating is social.

Hopefully, I will add the Brownie pictures for next week - I need to ensure the Brownies parents are happy for their children to appear.

Week 7

The pups had a busy social calendar this week - visting the Brownies mid-week and having the litter assessment Saturday, but there was still time to play. The Brownie pictures will be put up next week.

Cripes, incoming.

Week 6

The pups are begining to interact with each other more now and play, play, play. That starts quite early in the morning :-)... Saffi has been very playful, but the pups find her a handful :-)

Play, play, play....

okay, gulp!

Maddi is a real star with pups.

Thanks to the Adam's family for the cakes..

Saffi gets a break.

"Time to go back to the pups, Saffi!"

Psychological milestone - awareness of low flying lentils.

Week 5

The pups have been outside a good bit this week enjoying the sun, rain and visitors. They are much more focused and capable at everything they do, but reserve special efforts for mayhem! Saffi is still game to feed despite the teeth, but the mob are certainly well on the way to transitioning to 'real food'.

Week 4

The pups have been 'meeting their public' this week. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and I'm so impressed with Saffi's attitude to it all. They are starting to enjoy solids this week.

Solids sadly included a local fisherman.

Fish-fingers

Week 3

Amazing the difference a week can make. The pups are getting more aware and mobile and it is getting harder for Saffi to get in before they ambush her :-).

She had a nice trick working where she would 'tidy' the nest whilst standing and attract the pups to her. Then she would quickly move to a clear area and get down ready to feed. However, they are starting to be able to feed from her standing, so she will have to work something else out! We will help her by opening the space out this week which means we can pen the pups in easily whilst she gets 'ready' and only then release the pups :-)

Cosmic checks the puppies out.

And even gets in to check the one in the corner.

And then he got hit! (Joke -Saffi under the ruck :)

Our own 'Mad-Eye Moody'

Saffi is having to stretch to fit them in!

Despite the camera team, Saffi remains focused on the essentials.

:-)

You can see the pups starting to relate to each other in the next shots

"I'd just managed the sitting down when......

.....and I had to learn about collisions quick!"

Maddi decides to help out and do a night shift.

Week 2

Big week for the pups as eyes begin to open, ears begin to drop and movement is more directed.

Day 5 to 8

Towards the end of the first week the gap between feeds increases as the milk kicks in. Sleep! The fun begins as the mad-cap goose-stepping dogs arrive, blind and deaf, but pumping out the limbs and hurling themself forward. A real make-you-smile experience. Great fun. Enjoy :-) .

The kids are working on 'the line'.

Day 3 and 4

I have to sleep but I have so many nice photos from these two days that I can't do them justice in the time available. So I'll settle for the following

And a crazy sequence.

On day 3, I was on puppy watch when one of the pups went straight up Saffi's side and 'over the top'. I was surprised, as I don't expect pups of 3 days to go up but to waddle around on the flat (thankfully). At this point in their development it is brest stroke without the legs. 'Up and over', thankfully comes later :-).

Next day, I was able to get the camera primed when I saw the following unfolding.

Up....

Up....

and over......

Saffi muses on what is to come :-) The garden fences are old and in places less than 8 foot.

First Days

Saffi is doing well and really impressing us in her first days as a new mum.

P U P P Y !

Gotcha!!

Proud mum

Not a bad line

Saffi is pregnant. The scan confirmed at least 10 puppies. The due date is the 17th of May and going to their homes mid-July (ish).

The litter will be raised in our home as part of the family. They will be raised on a raw diet and character assessed at 7 weeks before placing in their homes.

Contact us for details on 01425-461079 or email Bridget . We will update this page as the mating progresses.

The LCGB has recently added an advice page for prospective puppy owners. It contatins lots of advice on what living with a leonberger puppy is like and what you should be looking for from your breeder. We think it is essential reading for any prospective puppy owner new to the breed. You can read it here.

We are delighted that Carol Lear of Alfross has allowed us use Tug. He is a 4 year old dog who has been lightly shown but very successful. His parents are International Champion Grizzly v. Dreiburgenland (date of birth 26/04/1998) and Finnish Champion Björntassen Diana (date of birth 23/09/1998).

Both Grizzly and Dianna are 10 this year and are both very active. You can see more pictures of Tug and Dianna at Alfross site. You can see more of Grizzly at the Dragongården's site. He is currently on the front-page but also has other pages dedicated to him.

Tug at 2.

Saffi's parents are Herbert v. Matthiasberg and our own girl Brindy (Kinghern Perfect Peace at Glenbrindy). Both are 7 years old and enjoying life to the full.
