Title of Post:  Ministerial Assistant with special responsibility for Youth Work in the congregation and parish of Greenbank Church, Edinburgh.  It is recognised that the post contains an element of flexibility and the following description will be subject to final adjustment to take into account the particular gifts and skills of the successful applicant as well as the requirements of the congregation.

Job Remit

The role will be that of an initiator and facilitator and supporter and will include the following responsibilities,

  1. To evaluate with the Minister Greenbank’s current Christian education programme for young people, especially teenagers and young adults and make recommendations for development and extension of this work in a coordinated manner.
  2. To share an active leadership role in the existing Christian education groups for teenagers.
  3. To explore Greenbank’s Christian outreach to young people and to develop new initiatives in this area
  4. To be responsible with the Minister for planning and being involved in worship appropriate for young people.
  5. To participate by arrangement with the minister in the wider worship and work of the Church.
  6. To keep themselves informed of developments and resources in the areas of Christian youth education and outreach in the Church of Scotland and the wider church and draw on these where appropriate. 

 

Working Relationships

  1. The appointee will work with the Minister who will be their line-manager
  2. The appointee will liaise with the Youth Education Support Group, a committee of the Kirk Session charged with overseeing and supporting youth work.
  3. The appointee will liaise with the current voluntary leaders of the Christian Education groups within the congregation, offering them support, ideas and resources to develop and enhance their existing work.
  4. The appointee will liaise with the leaders of other young people’s organisations eg scouts and guides.
  5. A support group of 4/5 members from the wider congregation will be provided for the appointee.

 

Skills and Qualifications

Essential

      1.  A lively Christian faith

  1. Experience of working successfully with young people
  2. Strong communication and team-working skills

 

Desirable

  1. Theological education
  2. Training for some relevant form of ministry
  3. Active membership of the Church of Scotland or one of its ecumenical partners

 

Conditions

Hours: 18 per week (approx) including Sundays and some evenings

Salary:  £10,000 per annum

Holidays: Four weeks annually plus 8 statutory days

Length of Contract:  3 years subject to review after 1 year

Child Protection.  The successful applicant must comply with the Church of Scotland’s Child Protection Procedures.
