BannerTHE GREENBANK BANNER

"ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL"

The Banner Group was formed under the leadership of Mrs Mary Hunter in the Autumn of 1995 and set out under the design direction of Mrs Jean Brownlie, to make a banner.

The group selected a children’s hymn with as much pictorial imagery as possible. "All things bright and beautiful" incorporating the lettering

"The Lord God made them all"

With a vision of "little flowers that open and little birds that sing" a foundation was laid on which the various scenes were built.

Some of the group have likened the beach scene to Port Seton and the purple headed mountain to the Pentland Hills, an appropriate local reference. But imagination, like faith, has no boundaries.

Each member of the group created their own design motif; an animal, a bird, a butterfly or a collection of flowers. Sixteen daisies represent the children and teacher who died at the Dunblane Primary School, the chain linking each and the inner landscape, are supported by the blue tits.

The lettering, symbolic of the ‘cold wind in the winter’, billows across an area suggestive of a stained glass window. Beneath this lie ‘the sunset and the morning’, ‘the purple headed mountain’, ‘the river running by’ and an area suggestive of ‘the pleasant summer sun’. Ripe fruits intermingle with foliage and along with shells and seaweed surround the inner panel.

‘How great is God Almighty who has made all things well’.

The Group is now continuing on Mondays once a month, with new projects and new horizons. Contact the Church Office if you would like to join them.
