Central to life at Greenbank is of course worship. The congregation has
always had a broadly inclusive theological ethos. It believes in the importance
of the Minister preaching / teaching each Sunday and that all the activities
that happen throughout the week are a reflection of the faith expressed
during worship. This ethos is central to its existence.
The pattern of
worship at Greenbank is complicated to write down – but is actually
quite simple in practice!
- There is a 10.30am traditional service in the Church
every Sunday with a Children’s Address featuring early in the
service prior to the children leaving for the various Spectrum (Sunday
School) groups. Having previously supplemented CH3 with ‘Junior
Praise’ and then ‘Common Ground’, CH4 was purchased
at the earliest opportunity and the congregation is now learning some
new hymns. Also in this service, members of the congregation participate
by reading the Scripture passages.
- Every Sunday in June, July and August there is
a less formal service in the Centenary Hall at 9.30am lasting about
half an hour.
- The Centenary Hall is also the venue for “First
Sunday” services at 9.30am on the first Sundays of November, December,
February, March, April and May. These informal services are led by various
groups from the congregation.
- The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is served
on the first Sunday in October and the third Sunday in January, March
and June with services at 9.00am in the church and 3.00pm in the Braid
Room in addition to the 10.30am service. All four of these services
are preceded by a Preparatory service in the Braid Room at 7.30pm on
the previous Friday.
- Communion is also celebrated at 9.30am on the Sunday
before Christmas, Easter Day and Pentecost.
- There is now no evening service but on the Sunday
before Christmas there is a Carol Party held in the Main Hall at 7.00pm.
