We visited here recently after a trip to a nearby mill with Lillimouse had left us with a few hours spare. We were impressed with how there was practically no evidence of vandalism, graffiti or other unofficial visitors.
On that trip we only explored the modern 5 storey section and the roof which, although very enjoyable wasn't very inspiring.
We had headed towards the old part of the hospital but turned back when we found lights on in the corridor and we tripped a motion sensor in an office, which flashed red, but didn't set off any alarm that we could hear.
The following week I discovered the hospital had been built in 1906 by the Wigan Union Workhouse, and was referred to as the Poor Law Infirmary. I also found this photograph of when it first opened, comparing it, and a map of the same date, with a modern satellite image showed all these old buildings remain within the later additions.
Lillimouse's write up of that trip can be found here Urban Desertion - Billinge. (Very informative and clearly presented site, well worth a look)
