BILLINGE HOSPITAL (1)

We visited here recently after a trip to a nearby mill with Lillimouse had left us with a few hours spare. We were impressed with how there was practically no evidence of vandalism, graffiti or other unofficial visitors. On that trip we only explored the modern 5 storey section and the roof which, although very enjoyable wasn't very inspiring.
Lillimouse's write up of that trip can be found here Urban Desertion - Billinge. (Very informative and clearly presented site, well worth a look)

We had headed towards the old part of the hospital but turned back when we found lights on in the corridor and we tripped a motion sensor in an office, which flashed red, but didn't set off any alarm that we could hear. The following week I discovered the hospital had been built in 1906 by the Wigan Union Workhouse, and was referred to as the Poor Law Infirmary. I also found this photograph of when it first opened, comparing it, and a map of the same date, with a modern satellite image showed all these old buildings remain within the later additions.
