The two golden rules of buying paintings
are:
Buy what you like. Buy what you can afford.
These obvious
rules should apply to almost everything you buy.
Another
simple piece of advice is that couples should agree on main feature
paintings,
but each should be able to choose paintings they like for
secondary positions.
What else can you do to help yourself make the right
decision?
The more information you provide about your
room means the better we can help you find the right paintings(s).
The
size (including ceiling height) and purpose of the room, plus the
style and colours used for decoration. The height of dado
or picture rails, position of windows and doors, any wall lights or
large pieces of furniture, the exact size of the wall e.g. between
the edge of a curtain and a wall unit, the width of the chimney breast
and the height of the mantle piece.
From this information we can calculate
the size range of paintings that will suit each position.
An
easy way to check that a painting is the correct size is
to make some newspaper the external size of the frame, then
use a couple of small pieces of Bostic Blu-tack to fix it to the wall,
finally step back and see.
