Watercolours as a medium are a favourite with
many customers as they have a light and delicate touch, and is
a quintessentially British medium. It is also an unforgiving medium
in that mistakes are difficult or impossible to correct.
There
are many different styles of watercolour and depending on the strength
of the colour used, how translucent it appears. Straight watercolour
on dry paper gives good crisp detail. Loose atmospheric images usually
use a technique called wet on wet where the watercolour is laid
down on damp paper and results in very soft detail.
The
watercolours shown on this page are available for sale.

There are many other
techniques that artists frequently used including adding detail with
a fine black pen, scratching out for irregular finish for smoke or
clouds, on selected areas using gum arabic like a varnish to add extra
depth.
Occasionally a mixture of mediums is used like adding
gouache, a solid pigmented colour, to emphasise or correct something,
or using a little pastel to increase contrast or special effect.
