Many contemporary
paintings sold elsewhere are flat and have no life, which need
not be so. Life can be added either by an impasto (raised) paint surface
or using a surface texture to the painting. Clever use of colour
can also help create an original style.
The
method of application of the paint can create special effects,
using palette knives instead of brushes gives the paint surface an
interesting surface texture.
The freedom of expression of the
artist makes a painting have life. Ignore this factor and you will
tire of the painting quickly.
There are few rules
as what are the best colour combinations for contemporary paintings.
This can be more personal taste and the colours used in the intended
room.
Good advice is to check whether the painting can
be moved to an alternative room if the original room is redecorated
or would remain suitable if you move home. Any painting should meet
these criteria or you could be wasting your money.
