Many
contemporary paintings are created using acrylic paints. These
modern paints are coloured pigments suspended in an acrylic co-polymer
emulsion. Whilst wet the paint can be thinned with water, but once
dry the resin particles provide a tough, flexible film, which
is impervious to water.
Acrylic paints were introduced in 1963
and have opened up a whole new world to artists as they can be used
like oils on canvas or like watercolours on paper. These paints are
formulated to create impasto work, but can also be thinned with water
or other mediums to create extremely thin translucent films for
glazing and watercolour techniques.
Acrylic paints usually dry to a matt eggshell finish,
but there are mixing mediums and varnishes that can leave a satin
or gloss finish. Other addatives like pearlescent and metalic colours
can add extra interesting effects
Most canvases are now acrylic
primed as they can accept either oil or acrylic paints, whereas oil
based paints will not provide a base for an acrylic paint.
