Oil Paintings 2
There are many ways to apply oil paint, the most popular being with brushes or palette knives, although almost anything can be used like sponges, fingers or even to spray it.
Besides solid pigmented colour, some artists dilute oil paints until they become translucent. These paintings are termed oil wash and are more delicate in colour and resemble watercolours.
If multiple layers of different diluted colours are used then this is termed multiple glazing - the finest and most expensive technique in oils as it is very labour intensive due to the number of layers of paint. Amazingly the painting can change colour according to the colour temperature of the light falling on it e.g. sunlight or filament bulb.

How do you judge if a painting is value for money? Use your eyes to see if the painting is well finished and has sufficient detail for the price - ask if you are not sure. Then combine your opinion with the price and compare it against other paintings. This is easy at Just Paintings as there is a very wide price range to choose from. Genuine advice will always be provided as better educated customers usually return to make further purchases.
The term oil painting also covers acrylic paintings. Many contemporary artists use acrylics (coloured pigments suspended in an acrylic co-polymer emulsion) as they are quick drying, flexible and waterproof once dry. Introduced in 1963, acrylics are now believed to be as long lasting as traditional oil paints. Almost all canvas is now primed using an acrylic based paint as it can accept both oil and acrylic paints.
Further good good advice is to check whether the painting can be moved to an alternative room if the original room is redecorated or would remain suitable if you move home. Any painting should meet these criteria or you could be wasting your money.
