Watercolours
Watercolours as a medium are favoured as they have a light and delicate touch, and is a quintessentially British medium. It is also an unforgiving medium in that mistakes are difficult or impossible to correct.
There are many different styles of watercolour and depending on the strength of the colour used, how translucent it appears. Straight watercolour on dry paper gives good crisp detail. Loose atmospheric images usually use a technique called wet on wet where the watercolour is laid down on damp paper and results in very soft detail.
Broken window 15”x11” watercolour Ron Morgan
The subjects in watercolour can be very varied but landscapes and flowers are the most popular.
Local views in landscape are very popular, but many other general views of the British Isles are also stocked by artists from all over the country.
Other subjects that are ever popular are bustling marine scenes with old sailing or steam ships, beach scenes, figures including nudes, transport vehicles (cars, lorries traction engines, trains, etc.), animals (cats, dogs, farm animals) and garden scenes.
Cobham church 14”x10” watercolour Keith Varvell
A number of local views of surrounding villages are always kept in stock.
Some watercolour artists are also pleased to accept commissions of your house, the church you or a family member were married in or particular views. Surprisingly a commission costs no more than one of their regular stock paintings - providing it has a similar level of detail.
