Worksheet KS4 MANUFACTURE

Many varied methods of construction have been used to make toys. Different materials need different methods of assembly. As a general rule, early Victorian toys from around 1850 tend to be either very simple, often home-made, or very complicated and skilfully made by craftsmen. Thus the cost varied considerably. By the 1900s, small tin toys (or 'penny toys') were being mass produced for a working population now earning money in the factories. The costs were lower due to more efficient machines replacing hand processes. As the population grew - and the disposable incomes grew - so the demand for toys grew. By the middle of the twentieth century, most households were buying toys. A new material, plastic, gained popularity in the late 1940s. Along with safety regulations, this dramatically changed the design, content and presentation of toys from that of the previous century.
