Managing at the Leading Edge: New Challenges in Managing Nonprofit Organizations

Managing at the Leading Edge: New Challenges in Managing Nonprofit Organizations

Monday, February 6, 2006
Review by: Martin Price

This book is a view from outside of how nonprofit organizations are managed in the US.  Mike Hudson is one of the best-respected management consultants in the UK and the book is a product of a large number of interviews with senior managers of US non profit organizations.  It is both a snapshot view of state-of-the-art management and a practical primer in how to put these into practice.

I have this profoundly politically incorrect theory that all the best voluntary organisations, charities or social businesses are run by mad people. These are the people who will not be told that their vision for a children's hospice, a rural cinema or a new botanic garden is utterly impractical and that no-one will provide a penny to turn their crackpot idea into reality. This book is a good introduction to strategic management, albeit with somewhat of a bias towards the theoretical. This may be because it is by an academic. On the plus side, the author has talked to a number of practitioners in non-profit organizations, and includes practical examples, and case studies based on real situations, to illuminate the arguments put forward.

Unlocking Profit Potential: Your Organization's Guide to Social Entrepreneurship

This booklet is a very good short introduction to the basic ideas of Social Entrepreneurship. It is just the document to put in the hands of busy Board Members who need to understand the issues before they let their carefully nurtured nonprofit enter the scary world of "real" business.

Selling Social Change (Without Selling Out): Earned Income Strategies for Nonprofits

Selling Social Change (Without Selling Out): Earned Income Strategies for Nonprofits

According to the author, this is an anti-capitalist's attempt to draw a distinction between commerce and capitalism and in so doing to redeem commerce as an instrument of social change.

Review by: Dr Martin Price

This book looks at strategic alliances between non-profit organizations and for-profit corporations. The author interviewed a number of successful participants in collaborations and presents success stories, checklists, and tools. But is this the whole story?
