In conjunction with VIN Technology Services and Birmingham University Particularly useful in surfactant characterisation is Cryo-SEM whereby extremely fragile structures (such as multi-lamellar vesicles - also known as spherulites) can be examined and photographed at high magnifications. When used in conjunction with EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), SEM becomes even more versatile. For example, when examining a highly polished or electroplated surface it is possible to identify any inclusions that may have caused pitting, information that may yield salvation in an expensive and confusing production problem.
