Saturday 13 October 2007   7.30 pm

Huddersfield Town Hall

Guest Conductor: Benjamin Ellin
Piano: Christopher George

  Holst: Hammersmith Prelude and Scherzo
  Schumann: Piano Concerto
  Brahms: Symphony No 2

An evening of music making that will engage, enlighten and excite. Three different pieces take us on a musical journey from the depths of the River Thames through the beautiful and eccentric world of Schumann, and finally to the heart of the Germanic tradition in Brahms.

We introduce pianist Christopher George, who will dazzle and revel in the musical and technical demands of the ever-popular Schumann concerto.

Violin: Martyn Jackson

Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture, Romeo and Juliet
  Khachaturian Violin Concerto
Delius The Walk to the Paradise Garden
Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Our second concert showcases music inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Featuring the immortal musical setting of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers by Tchaikovsky, we aim to take you on a decadently romantic tour of the most sumptuous classical selections we could bring together, all with the theme of passion and love. Music by Khachaturian, Delius and the wonderfully vibrant Symphonic Suite from Bernstein's West Side Story make up a programme that is sure to be a truly dazzling feast for your emotions!

Mozart & Mahler

Saturday 19 April 2008   7.30 pm

Huddersfield Town Hall

Guest Conductor: Christopher Swaffer
Soloist: Myvanwy Bentall

  Mozart Overture, The Magic Flute
  Mozart Concert Arias
  Mahler Symphony No. 1

April's concert combines the magic of Mozart with the might of Mahler. Award-winning young soprano Myvanwy Bentall joins the orchestra once more, to perform her own selection of arias alongside Mozart's mysterious and exciting Magic Flute overture. The second half of the concert is Mahler's extraordinary first symphony - ending in a triumphant blaze of glory (including a standing French Horn section), the symphony takes us on a journey through beautiful nature scenes, a funeral march, a Bohemian village band, and an exuberant Landler. Its wild, triumphant conclusion, the first of many of his symphonies to celebrate a victory of life over death, is not to be missed.
