The car was acquired in February 2002 as an original RS1600 rolling shell, with the objective of building a car to compete in the 2003 MSA British Historic Rally Championship.

During the following months the car was completely stripped and rebuilt to period works stage-rally specification.

The build was completed in December 2002, and as a shake down test the car competed in the Newton
Abbot Audi Stages in January 2003.
