About St Peter's Church ChoirThe Anglican church of St Peter
has two choirs, one of 20 lay clerks and choral scholars and 30 boys, and another of 30
girls. These sing services on Sundays and weddings. They are directed by Peter
Morris. The music department assistants are Dr. David
Rendell and Brian
Armfield. Boys between 7-12 and girls between 7-17 are welcome to audition at any time to join the choir. If they are successful, they sing with the choir as probationers for about six months and then are admitted as full members. They have opportunities to earn medals and they are paid (for weddings and funerals) according to experience and commitment. Boys rehearse on Mondays and Fridays, the lay clerks, choral scholars and girls on Fridays. The boys, lay clerks and choral scholars sing up to four Eucharists and Evensongs a month and the girls sing Evensong at 5.30 Friday once a month along with at least one Sunday Eucharist or Evensong a month (full details on the monthly Music List).
Parents are important to the choir, their commitment and hard work is very much appreciated. They often help with supervising the social life of the boys and girls and they help with several choir parties and social events through the year. Both the Girls and Boys choirs, supported by the lay clerks and choral scholars, go to sing at a cathedral for a week each year. Recent trips for the girls have included; Chester, St David's (South Wales) and Truro. Boys trips have included; Winchester, Lincoln, Wells, Exeter and Durham. These trips are excellent opportunities for us all to broaden our musical, social and spiritual knowledge and understanding. We also have a "Friends of The Music" associated with the church and its choir. They help the choir in many ways, from assisting with the purchase of music, subsidising vocal coaching for choral scholars, to ensuring concerts in the church are well attended. We encourage any lay clerks and choir parents to support the Friends and their valued work. Our choirs are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music.
