BME Capacity Development

This project, funded through The National Lottery, is now in its 3rd and final year (June 2009 end date). The focus is on building BME community group capacity through governance training, to enable a stronger and more established position organisational wise and within the city.

Various training courses have been provided by PREC, including an Appointed Person First Aid course, Media course, funding and many more.

Another aspect of the project, is to encourage BME community members to become more involved in the strategic direction of voluntary and public organisations. New and emerging communities need to have their voice heard and we are supporting their steps in achieving this.

The project has also encouraged volunteering support and this will be developed to assist PREC core work. A programme is currently being organised, but in the meantime, if you feel you would like to offer your skills in a voluntary capacity to assist PREC’s work, please get in touch with us.

Young People

A young people’s project has been developed to encourage greater community cohesion through identifying and diffusing inter community youth conflict/tensions.

The project has identified young people to participate in a youth leadership programme , which was publicised to young people through visits to community youth projects, schools and colleges.

Interested individuals went through an application and interview selection process and those successful young people carried out an initial confilct resolution session, before undertaking a Peacemakers Residential Course in Whitwell. This focused on individuals becoming youth leaders by developing conflict resolution, teamworking and youth work skills.

The Unity Peacemakers now meet on a fortnighly basis to maintain contact and identify any issues for resolution in the community. An events diary for these young people is being developed, together with a celebration evening.
