Sleeping States is the musical output of one Markland Starkie, a 23 year old small town somebody currently residing in the Big Smoke. Having spent a lot of time over the past few years making as much noise as possible whilst serving time in several bands including Kaito and Antihero, Markland started recording songs at home that were entirely more minimal in both volume and arrangement. As these songs grew in number Markland decided they needed his full attention and so Sleeping States was founded. All the songs were recorded on a cheap-ass four track, mostly in one take, to retain some sort of improvisational quality. Consisting mainly of electric guitars, found sounds and the odd vocal sampler, the music of Sleeping States generates simple soundscapes over which stories of love, separation and walks in the city are quietly drawn out.
