Influences include Maynard Ferguson, Tower of Power, and Blood Sweat & Tears.

Jan uses a Monette BL4 mouthpiece in a Schilke S42L John Faddis Model Custom trumpet with tuning bell, and also a Schilke S32 and Smith-Watkins 464 R25 Bb trumpet with Osmun CCAPS, Curry brass action rods, interchangeable lead-pipes designed in consultation with Derek Watkins and built by Richard Smith, London. For extreme register orchestral playing add to the above a Schilke P5-4 piccolo trumpet. For the 'ballad' end of playing a Yamaha Professional flugël horn is his first choice.

Jan is also very tall. For more information about Jan visit his website at http://www.trumpet1.com
