Langstone Cutters Rowing Club 2007 Log of Events
That rounds off 2007 very nicely -- a good year for the Langstone Cutters and next year we celebrate our 10th Anniversary!!!
Wednesday 26th December - Boxing Day Club Meet
TIARAS, TURBANS or TOUPEES
Boxing Day arrived, dull, cold and grey but after the excesses of Christmas day it was time to start working off the extra bits added. A good turnout of club members saw a wonderful variety of headgear. We managed to launch our Clayton - Gladys, a Tefi Skiff - Lottie and the Thames Waterman Cutter - Belle Founder. We were able to take all members out for a row along with some astounded bystanders - and they thought they were only going for a shore side stroll !! Mulled wine, coffee & tea were available to help keep the chill out of the bones.
A great time was had by everyone, enjoying the high tide and gentle conditions. What a grand way to round off 2007!
There are a selection of photos in the LCRC photo Gallery!
Sunday 25th November - Very High Tide and Club Rowing Thames Waterman Cutter
It was a cool Sunday in late November. The tide was predicted as high (4.9 m to be precise) and the London2Paris rowing team have managed to borrow a Thames Waterman Cutter. The Belle Founder was made available to member of the Langstone Cutters to experience the difference between boats. A good number of club members attended and we were able to make five full trips to give everyone a real chance at rowing a totally different style of boat. No comfy seats here just wooden benches; but with six rowers and a slender sleek hull the Belle Found veritably goes through the water really quickly. Thanks to the very high tide we were able to continue rowing for about 4 hours so a really good time was enjoyed by who attended. A few photographs were taken of the high water which can be seen in our November 25th gallery.
Thursday 25th October - Trafalgar and Great River Race Celebrations
About 25 members of the Langstone Cutters Rowing Club came together on Thursday 25th October to celebrate two special occasions: Lord Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar and the superb win for the super veterans at this years great river race.
The evening got started with a social get together and a few drinks. The Royal Oak pub did us proud with super English tradition of Roast Beef & Yorkshire pudding supper. This was followed by Les delivering the Trafalgar speech and toast to Lord Nelson. A toast was also given to the successful Super veterans team.
A few photographs were taken and these can be viewed in the LCRC Gallery.
Saturday 8th September - The Great River Race 2007 - Well Done SUPER VETS!
What a Club! Six rowing crews and boats were practised, prepared and transported to Richmond in London to take part in the Great River Race of 2007. What a gathering; the site and sounds of 280 entries ranging from the Dragon boats, Lifeboats, HMS Victory’s cutter all the way to the smallest pram dingy. Langstone Cutters Rowing Club was very well support both with rowers and land based supporters. Check out our teams and entrants in a more detailed version of the days events in the Great River Race story.
Saturday 4th August - The 5th Annual Beaulieu River Row
The Langstone Cutters Rowing Club were invited to take part in the 5th Annual Beaulieu River Row on Saturday 4th August 2007. As in past years, the row was open for all comers in any type of ‘oar’ or paddle propelled craft. This year there were over 50 craft entered ranging from the one person kayak through to the very impressive HMS Victory Cutter. Take a look at the full story of a wonderful day out on a beautiful river.

Saturday 21st July - Isle of Wight Row Successfully Completed
At the fourth attempt two teams of intrepid rowers set out to row from Langstone to Seaview, on the Isle of WIght, and back in a day. It was an adventure of two halves; the row out full of fun, smooth waters and good hard rowing and the row back a challenge of wind, waves and testing conditions. Read the full story in the IOW Rowing Log.
- A few photos were taken and can be seen in the gallery of the adventure.
Sunday 1st July - The Alternate Summer Regatta
Plans had been laid for the summer regatta. Visiting clubs were going to join Langstone Cutters to enjoy some competitive rowing, some fun & games and a BBQ to round off the day. However the great British summer weather struck again today. The forecast was for thundery showers, force 6-7 winds and choppy seas, even in the confines of Langstone harbour. So safety prevailed and the regatta was called off. This did not stop a few intrepid club members gaining experience of rowing in rough conditions.
- Take a look at some of the photos to see just what conditions were like!
Thursday June 2 1st - Summer Solstice Dawn Row
With a reasonably high tide and an early start (4:15am to be precise) about 16 members of the rowing club met by the Mill and launched both Tefis, Clayton Cutter (Gladys) and “15 Seconds”. The early morning darkness soon dissolved into the watery sunrise. Around 05:00am the sun burst through the clouds and shone over the rippled waters of Langstone Harbour. With a pair of Terns fishing, the lapping of the waves on the boat hull what could be better? Well “better” was the wonderful bacon rolls, fruit and orange juice provided by Mike & Deborah. Filled with breakfast, there was time for one final row round the harbour before mooring Gladys, packing away the other boats and off to start the day proper. A grand time was had by all and what a great way to start the longest day of the year!
Saturday June 2nd - Langstone Village Charity Fete
The Langstone Village Charity Fete involves the whole of Langstone Village with stalls and activities ranging from the tombola, through fast food, fancy dress & coconut shy. Entertainment was provided by a band, a dance display team and a traveling children’s entertainer. The Langstone Cutters Rowing Club has a stand on the high street which enabled us to tell the visitors what we were about and raise a little money for the village charity by having folks bail out the boat. The idea was to bail out the boat into a 3 gallon bucket and the fastest to fill the bucket won a price:
Sunday 22nd April - The Spring regatta. A time to test the rowing skills of the club with games, races & rowing skills. Teams were picked, Claytons and Tefis manned for races to Find the Sliver Brick, Race with the crew blindfolded (a real test of the Cox’s skills in communication), Backing Down races (make the boats travel stern first!) and straight forward racing at full pace. There are many photos can be see here:-
Sunday 11th March - At the start of every season the Langstone cutters are blessed by the local clergy and launched to begin the season. We were gifted with fine weather to start the year. A couple of photo galleries show a fine turnout and a great rowing
Wednesday 7th March - Get the year started with a bangers & mash and shanty evening at the Royal Oak Langstone. What is the bosun wearing round his neck in the last photo from the Shanty evening? The mind boggles!!
Thanks to all club members for their time and effort in putting together these photos!
