Langstone Cutters WON the London 2 Paris 2008 rowing race

Langstone Lifesavers Challenge: 2008 is the 10th Anniversary of the Langstone Cutters Rowing Club (LCRC) and earlier this year it was suggested that, as well as the ‘Round the Island’ event, we participate in the FIRST ever London to Paris rowing race. A number of members expressed interest and we have now entered an LCRC team to compete in this unique race.

While rowing from London to Paris in a Thames Waterman Cutter boat has been done four times before - with a record time of 90 hours - this is the first time a RACE has been run. Polar Adventures Limited and the crews will be working together to make it a success. The rowing starts in London on May 2nd 2008. It will be raced over a number of legs. Leg 1: Starting at Westminster Bridge, London will see the teams racing down the Thames, round Kent to Dover. Leg 2: From Dover to Le Havre which will include the Channel crossing under strict supervision as it is the busiest waterway in the world. Leg 3: Leaving Le Havre through the tidal section to Rouen. After a short break then follows the short but hard pull to Amfrevilles, the site of the first lock.. The final legs will be a series of puruit races, lock to lock; on handicap (i.e. Slowest boat gets a head start, faster boats in pursuit). The finish is Paris beside the Eiffel Tower very early on the morning of May 8th. More information about the race and the organisers will be found on the London2Paris Rowing web site

This will be a significant opportunity for attracting local and national interest – on the web, in newspapers, radio and television so we decided to start the Langstone Lifesavers Fund: The L2P team has set a target of raising £50,000 (€65,000) for charities with a common theme – saving lives. Our first charities, which we hopefully won’t need on our trip, are the RNLI and the Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer; both charitable funds that save lives at sea.  Our nominated Land-based lifesaving charities included are the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

Who is crazy enough to do it?
Why not Meet the team we have 10 rowers and 2 support team members who are committed to training and rowing hard to prepare for this exciting race.

The Rowing Training programme
   – row, row, row the boat...

“Time in the boat and then more time in the boat and then even more time in the boat.” Well, that’s the general rule for any long distance rowing.

The team of 10 rowing in Belle Founder (see below) means we will be rowing for 4-6 hours each before taking a 2 hour break and then climbing back in.

The L2P crew has trained hard and has accomplished some major long distance rows in open water as part of the training, one a month. We began with 40 miles in September and will be rising though to 80 miles in January to 120 miles in April. This has included day and night exercises to get us used to rowing in the dark and even trickier, changing crews and position in the dark! We have received fantastic support from the Hayling Island branch of the RNLI and without whom some of our all night/all day rowing sessions would not have been possible. The London2Paris team are most grateful.

Fitness Training
   -cardio, weights and pilates

How do you get 10 amateur rowers fit for a week long competitive race across the busiest waterway in the world?

Olympic rowers train for 4 years to row a 6 minute race. We have 26 weeks to get fit to row for a minimum of 6 days rowing in open water both during the day and night, sleeping rough on the safety boat and clambering in and out of the boats to change over crews. Clearly a mental challenge as much as a physical one.

Our initial programme includes 4 sessions a week including gym, cycling, swimming or running and of course rowing on a machine and in a boat. In October we started a planned 26 weeks schedule to raise fitness, endurance, lactate management, power levels and our pelvic floors. In addition to each team member aiming to train 5 hours a week on top of rowing weekends, we are also attending a specially designed pilates course to help us build our core strength. Its new for most of the crew but everyone is keen to build up their backs, bums and tums to take the load.
Well the team are fit a ready to ROW! All of their hard work will hopefully pay off with the winning of the race!

We are going need a bigger boat “, quote from the movie Jaws - and we had one!

TWC-Sat2511-600The L2P race will be rowed in modified Thames Waterman Cutters (TWC) provided by the race organisers Polar Adventures. These are 34ft, 6 oared boats that are light and fast but not originally designed for open salt water rowing. It was a bit of learning curve for us, so we were able to borrow a TWC, the Belle Founder, and have used her for all our training. We would like to express our thanks to the Worshipful Company of Founders, one of the City Livery Companies, for the loan of the Belle Founder. The first thing we noticed was how much faster a TWC moves compared to our own Clayton Skiffs – 22ft 4 oared boats that are heavier and slower but provide a stable base for getting fit and practising.
On April 21st the Belle Founder was returned to London to be prepared for the race. We were all very sad to see her leave Langstone so befitting the lady of the seas she is she was given a really good wash & brush up in Langstone on the Sunday.

A big Thank You from the L2P crew !
