SWIPE Heritage steel pan project
An exciting new project to broaden and enhance the Afri-
can Caribbean heritage. Swipe plan to open a pan yard in
January 2007 to teach the making and tuning of the steel
pan. We will use air tools instead of the traditional manual
tools to produce the pans.
SWIPE is the only organization in the United Kingdom to
undertake this type of project.
With these tools a 10 player set of pans can be produced
within a month instead of the usual 18 months waiting time.
The SWIPE Heritage Project links directly with other projects
we have delivered over the past four years.
This is a fantastic opportunity for young people interested in
building a positive image, developing cultural awareness of
the African Caribbean heritage and will ensure the art of
steel pan lives on!!!

SWIPE STUDIO PROJECT
SWIPE COMMUNITY MUSIC PROJECTS
We offer a fantastic opportunity for young people between
the ages of 8 - 19 to learn to play the steel pan.
Workshops are held at the Orchard Youth and Community
Centre every Saturday morning during term time; 10.30
am - 1.30pm, and Wednesday and Saturday mornings at
11.30 - 1.30 during school holidays
This is a community music project involving
children and young people from a range of
ethnic and religious backgrounds who are
keen to work together to improve community
relations.
This project will work with children and young
people between the ages of 8 - 19 years of
age and also unemployed young people.
Workshops will be held at the Orchard Youth
and Community Centre to teach vocal coach-
ing, DJing, Studio Recording and Sampling
which the young people will then produce onto
a demo CD.
You will also have the opportunity to work
with accomplished musicians, vocalists and
sound engineers.
Teaching session at Orchard youth Club
Slough All Stars Steel Band formed in the sum-
mer of 1998 under the leadership of Bob Parris.
Since then they have progressed and developed
into the foremost awesome steel band in Slough.
At present the All Stars are mentoring and teach-
ing young people from the senior schools in
Slough the art of steel pan playing at the Orchard
Youth Club.
They also take bookings for most private func-
tions, weddings, christenings, birthdays and com-
munity fetes.

STUDIO
This project provided a place for children
and young people to gain experience in the
different aspects of studio work.
They were given the opportunity to use
multi track recording facilities, where they
were able to improve their composing
skills, they tried mixing, sampling and CD
production.
Up and coming young bands were also
offered rehearsing and recording sessions.

Panachea evolved
from a group of
young people
coming together
from various senior
schools across
Slough.
Panachea’s dream
is to play Notting
Hill carnival, to
help them on their
way they have
played in several
places including on
Meridian TV.
The Charles duo
PANACHEA
SWIPE and the Slough All
Stars Steel Band contacted
all the secondary schools in
Slough and offered them
taster sessions on the steel
pans.
This gave the young people
an opportunity to gain first
hand experience in steel pan
playing.
A programme of dynamic
workshops then followed at
the Orchard Youth and
Community Centre twice
weekly where the young
people received training in
the art of steel pan playing
All Stars giving taster sessions
in schools

Rehearsals at SWIPE Music

The culmination of a year’s
hard work was showcased at
the West Wing Art Centre in
Slough. It was for the young
participants on both projects to
show the work they had done
over the past year, they were
also joined by other join talents
around the community.

SLOUGH WEST INDIAN PEOPLE’S ENTERPRISE
SWIPE was formed in 1997 to help further the education and training of children and young
people at risk of being excluded from school. It also offered single parents, families and the over
forties assistance in the creation of employment opportunities.
At present SWIPE is using music as a medium to work with young people between the ages of 8 -
19 years of age and in some cases up to 25.
We provide them with out of school activities (learning the steel pan, teaching studio techniques,
and giving young bands rehearsal space) this enables them to broaden their musical experiences
and help them develop confidence, better communication skills and group awareness.
SWIPE also works with key providers across the borough - Connexions, Slough Youth Offending
Team
Slough West Indian People's
Enterprise (SWIPE)
Our steel pan project was recently
boosted by a donation of £1000
from the Thames Valley Police.
Insp John Goosey who presented
Swipe with the cheque said “The
Police was always happy to support
local community groups that gave
young people something construc-
tive to do with their time".
We would like to thank the local
Police for their contribution to our
steel pan project, we would also
like to take this opportunity to
thank all our sponsors and sup-
porters who have supported us
through out the past years.
