Catherine Underwood
Our conductor, Catherine Underwood, has been involved in music from an early age. By 18 Catherine had achieved the top grade VIII qualification on Piano, Trumpet and Recorder,
all with distinction and gained Diplomas on Trumpet and Recorder.At Oxford University Catherine was Conductor of Oxford University Brass Ensemble and played in the Oxford University Orchestra, Oxford Sinfonietta and Oxford Philharmonia.
Catherine graduated in 1993 and is now Head of Music and Head of Expressive Arts at Sponne
School in Towcester. She has now conducted the band for nearly 9 years and has directed the
band for its first CD “Varsity Variations”, a broadcast on the BBC Radio 2 “Listen to the Band”
and recently became only the second woman to conduct a Championship section band in the
National Finals.
