'Listen to Us' Launch
On the 5th March the 'Listen To Us' training group successfully facilitated their first 'Our Values' training session for a group staff from various organisations across Berkshire. The day was a great success with very positive feedback for the group. Course participants commented that the day 'made me more aware of how the service users felt they were being treated' and that 'the people leading the course made me appreciate it even more as they were so involved'.
'Listen To Us' are a group of self advocates who are designing and presenting training sessions about learning disabilities. The training focuses on values and raising awareness about what it is like to receive support and includes courses to help staff better support people with learning disabilities.
The group all have learning disabilities themselves and are supported by Support Horizons. The group recently completed a 'train the trainer' course and have now begun designing and facilitating training courses of their own. The initial 'Listen To Us' pilot project was funded through grants from the Wokingham Learning Disability partnership Board and an ESF grant from Berkshire Community Foundation.
The groups first course is called 'Our Values'. The course covers various aspects of supporting people, all presented from the point of view of people who directly receive support themselves. It is a personal and even challenging look at how we support people with a learning disability.
The group is now looking forward to further opportunities to present this unique training. You can find out more about Listen to Us on here.
