I first worked on a building site in 1957 and in a lifetime spent in the construction industry I have gained considerable experience in working procedures and the use of building equipment.  In 1985 I completed a week's residential training course at the Construction Industry Training Board, Bircham Newton.  During my career I have investigated many construction accidents, some fatal, and have produced reports for litigation.

During the period 1989 until 1999, I was the Partner, then Director, responsible for Health and Safety in the practice of R T James and Partners, Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers.  I drafted the firm’s Safety Policy and carried out assessments of the firm’s procedures.  This included the consideration and assessment of the risks to the health and safety of employees to which they were exposed whilst at work.

I have been a Planning Supervisor since 1994, acting in accordance with the duties laid down in the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994.  The duties include an assessment of risks inherent in the design and construction of buildings, including the risk of injury to persons maintaining and using the building.

In 1995 I established a specialist Planning Supervisor Group within R T James and Partners, which was subsequently engaged by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to provide Planning Supervisor services.

The Highways Departments of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea appointed me Planning Supervisor for all Highway Repair and Maintenance Contracts in 1996.  I developed a Generic Pre-Contract Health and Safety Plan that was adapted to suit the particular circumstances of each job location.  The service involved my staff and I visiting each site to consider specific safety risks.  We liaised with the Contractors carrying out the works and reviewed safety issues with them. I continued to provide this service until I resigned from R T James and Partners in 1999.

In February 1999, when I became a Partner in the practice of ELROND Engineering, I commenced a detailed review of Heath and Safety legislation, giving special consideration to the Employer/Employee relationship. I have produced summaries of relevant legislation and published “Manual Handling - A Technical Review”.

I have carried out a detailed review of internationally available guidance on the specification of floor surfacings to reduce the risk of pedestrian slips.  This has resulted in the drafting of the paper: "Floor Slips - A Technical Review".

In recent years I have investigated many cases involving accidents in the workplace, public and private locations.  I have carried out re-constructions of accidents and prepared Expert Reports for use in litigation, both as a Party Appointed Expert and a Single Joint Expert.
