What happens at a “Tydd St Jive” session?

Doors open at 7:30pm, and the bar is open. Music has started and some dancers are already trying out some moves

The evening consists of two lessons. In each, the teacher teaches three moves, which link together to create a short sequence.

The dancers form lines in pairs and the first move is walked through slowly. The ladies move along the lines so everyone dances with many others. After a while, the move is danced to a beat and then to music. The same follows with each of the the three moves. Finally the moves are linked together and the first part ends with everyone dancing these moves.

During the interval, many people continue to dance, whether the moves just taught or freestyle.

The second part follows the same pattern as the first, but with different moves. At the end of the second part, all six moves are linked together.

The lesson ends at around 10:15pm and this is followed by a freestyle, where most people carry on dancing to 11:30pm.

What if I don’t have a partner?

Whether you are a man or a lady, it doesn’t matter. In the lesson the dancers move around so everyone gets a chance. During the freestyle, you can ask anyone to dance-they can’t refuse!

Is Modern Jive difficult?

The teachers are very experienced and break the moves down into easy-to-learn chunks. Progress is quick, and you will definitely have learned some moves by the end of the evening. There is no fancy footwork to learn either.

I am a total beginner. Will I feel out of it?

Absolutely not! There are always beginners at Tydd St Jive events, as well as people of varying levels of experience, But everyone is very welcoming and happy to help beginners to learn and improve.
