EXPERIENCE

More than 10 years experience in conservation and rural development in Romania. Also has work experience and language abilities in China and Thailand.

First worked in Bucharest in 1991 when he was First Secretary at the British Embassy. As such, has excellent contacts with central and regional government and lobbying/ communication skills.

Subsequently, has been Director of an NGO involved in conservation of vernacular built heritage, and is currently in charge of project development, project management and fund raising for conservation/sustainable development projects in Romania. Strengths include

CAREER

2005 to date: Romania: Assisted with the preparation of the successful bid for development and implementation of a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan for Romanian national Forestry Development Project. Will assist with project management. The component involves the establishment of M&E procedures acceptable to the World Bank, and supporting development and implementation of M&E systems within the Project Management Unit (under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, MAPDR).

2004 to date: Romania: Project Development, Project Management and Fund Raising for the ADEPT Foundation, whose aims are to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Transylvania through the revival of the area’s rural economy and the sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Activities include:Small enterprise programme, providing technical assistance and grants for projects that have environmental and sustainable development benefits, e.g. investment and training in small enterprises, such as village workshops, that will create employment and pass on traditional skills to young people.
  • Flora and fauna studies linked to design and implementation of conservation- oriented land management, and to school education programmes
  • Development of community forestry management schemes to give economic incentives to sustainable forest management, through local processing and improved marketing, including group certification.

2002-04: Romania: Project Coordinator of the ADEPT Project for Global Environment Facility/World Bank International Finance Corporation, through the International Union for Conservation of Nature. During this period, the following were carried out:

  • Flora and fauna studies to map areas needing special protection;
  • Medicinal plants identified;
  • Grassland analysis and management guidelines of the area created;
  • Pilot scheme to assist small farmers meet new milk hygiene regulations;
  • Research and development strategy for the development of organic agriculture;
  • Farmer associations and training scheme designed in preparation for organic markets.
  • These activities were carried out in consultation and partnership with villagers, universities, central and local government and other stakeholders to ensure local support and long-term viability.

2002 to date: Independent consultant, specialising in rural development and conservation projects in Romania.

1995 to date: Owner and manager of organic beef farm in England.

1999-2002: Director, UK charity (Mihai Eminescu Trust). In charge of overall strategy and planning, fund raising and project development contacts with International Organisations, Romanian Government, and NGOs. Overall charge of Romanian projects for conservation of vernacular built heritage plus small enterprise development.
