James Campbell

I was born in 1942 at Cawdor in the North of Scotland, and was brought up there, and in South West Pembrokeshire, two landscapes of great lyrical beauty which are decisive influences on my work. Introduced to ceramics by Gordon Baldwin, I went on to train in the Royal College of Art where I was taught to draw by Dicky Chopping, Some years of involvement with sculptural ceramics were followed by a period in the early 1980's when I had no workshop and turned increasingly to drawing. When I started making ceramics again - initially utilitarian vessels for my own use - it was not long before imagery started to appear on the pots. I now make pots and drawings, sometimes combined, sometimes not. The imagery still informed by the landscapes of my childhood, remembered and observed. I moved back to Pembrokeshire in 1995.
