Fired Earth

Many of the unconventional pieces in the exhibition can be described as an exploration of the intricacies of fired clay. The normal criterion of fitness for purpose does not apply. This is where 'ceramics'' is a more apt term than 'pottery' to describe the work.

The clay used is a mixed body consisting of earth, sand, sawdust, vermiculite, iron filings, paper and much else.

In forming shapes it can be slabbed or poured like wet concrete, but is hardly suitable for throwing in the conventional way; more like making mud pies.

The fire is the final arbitrator. It is unpredictable, sometimes your friend but never your wholehearted servant. Your preconceived concept will sometimes materialise, and that is when the maker receives his reward of aesthetic pleasure. It is hoped that the viewer will also share a little of this prize.
