Founded In 1926, the Portsmouth Players, since their initial production of "The Gondoliers"in 1927, have presented a wide range of musicals, including many classics and a number of new shows.
Employing professional directors and choreographers, musical directors and musicians, scenery and costumes supplies in a full-size theatre. The Portsmouth Players aim to work to the highest possible professional standard. Each production costs between £30,000 and £50,000 to stage, and audiences for previous shows have regularly exceeded 8000 for a week's run.
We have leased our headquarters building, The Barn in Milton Park, Portsmouth since 1956, and applied for and received a substantial grant from the National Lottery through our Arts Council of England which had enabled us to commission a total refurbishment of the building. We now have a modern complex of rehearsal rooms, wardrobes, props and scenery stores, and a social area fit for the 21st century and to enable us to carry out our work to bring musical entertainment not only to the people of Portsmouth but Hampshire and the adjoining counties.
As well as our three principal productions planned for 2007, we also perform a variety of concerts, cabarets, and other shows, either at The Barn or other venues. We also have a very active youth section, Theatre 11-18, which was founded in 1978 and aims to develop in young people a range of the theatre skills and the discipline of working with others through training, workshops, and other annual musical productions. Many members of the Theatre 11-18 graduate to the senior company, and a number of former members have gone on to train at stage school and enter the professional theatre.
