Coaching & Training

Coaching is delivered by a small team of volunteer BCU-qualified coaches assisted by other experienced members.

Sunday sessions

On a typical Sunday, members will generally be divided into groups of similar ability and each group will either journey along the river or practice specific techniques with a coach. This will be followed by the opportunity to try out different boats. The session begins at 10am and usually finishes by 1pm. Everyone will be encouraged to participate in a timed sprint (usually 2000m) towards the end of the session.

All paddlers are encouraged to keep an on-going record of their weekly activities and qualifications, and club has prepared suitable log sheets which members can use for this purpose (these can download from the Members' Area).

Additional training

In addition to the Sunday sessions, full members also have access to further training sessions at the clubhouse throughout the week, subject to coaches' availability. For summer 2010 the club is offering a full programme of on-water and off-water sessions, generally starting at 6pm each evening and on Saturday morning. The available sessions are listed on a board at the clubhouse and paddlers must indicate that they plan to attend by adding their names to the board (having checked with the relevant coach that the session is suitable for them). During the winter months, evening training will be largely limited to gym work and will be tailored to suit demand.

During the winter, all full and associate members are welcome to attend swimming sessions on Monday evenings at Bishop's Stortford College's swimming pool (Maze Green Road) - there is an additional session fee which varies according to the number of attendees. Please ask for details.
