CIS
(Construct Industry Scheme) - As of August 1999 it has become
law that every tradesperson in the construction industry must hold
a valid CIS card. This is a requirement enforced by the Health and
Safety Executive. Having obtained a CIS card, you are effectively
a self-employed sub-contractor. As such, you can claim expenses incurred
by yourself relating to work, travel, protective clothing, laundry,
and tools etc.
How
do I get one? - You can only obtain one of these cards once you
arrive in the UK. You will need to take the following with you to
your nearest Inland Revenue office:
- I.D.
- 2
x
passport photos
- Proof
of address (ideally a utility bill)
- National
Insurance (NI) number or proof of an appointment to obtain a NI number
- If
you do not have a permanent NI number you will be issued with
a temporary CIS card, which will be valid for 3 months.
Upon receipt of your NI number you will be issued with a permanent
CIS card.
