This correspondent does not possess the
vocabulary or literary genius to be able to do justice to this performance
in the 1st Round of The EDF Junior Vase, suffice to know that the result
conveys everything that needs to be said in this family medium.
In this Merit table game Otliensians set off
well against the Table leaders. Rob Gray, usually a centre but drafted into
the second row had a storming run early on and crossed the line only to have
the try disallowed. The cross field wind gave some tricky conditions for
both sides but the Ensians pack were playing well and Ton O'Donnell was
winning some good lineout ball. The game was quite even but the team work of
the Ensians was poor and there were no scores during the first half. Otliensians 3rd XV 10 PTS V Nestle Rountrees 26 pts.
The experienced visitors were soon on the
attack and used their extra weight in the pack well to secure a pushover try
early in the game. Otliensians were completely unphased by this setback and
immediately attacked and almost scored wide out. The visitors were
dominating the primary possession but the Ensians were working hard in the
loose play to recover the ball after some excellent tackles but eventually
Rountrees scored again and converted. After 20 mins a super move saw wing
Daniel Garnett completely split the visitors defence and Peter Boultby, a
very active scrum half, scored. Unfortunately the home side began to kick
away hard won possession but did well to defend the counterattacks of
Rountrees who held a 5 - 12 pts lead at the break. |
