OLD OTLIENSIANS 58 HORNSEA 6

Hornsea had always provided a stern test for
the home side over the years, but this performance and result confirmed the
strides that Otliensians have made over the past two seasons, culminating in
a 9 try victory that produced some of the best rugby seen at Chaffers Field.
The home side got off to the best possible start with Foster kicking a
penalty after only 2 minutes, following a clean line out take, rolling maul
and chip by Birch which was gathered by Nick Keinhorst. After 8 minutes
pressure defence by Otliensians forced the turnover for Duggan to create the
gaps in the Hornsea defence, Birch again chipped for the left hand corner
and fullback Smith won the race to the line. Hornsea converted a penalty
after 13 minutes, but immediately from the kick off an intricate move in
midfield involving Foster, Kristian Keinhorst and Lee O'Donnell made the
space on the left for right wing Woods to outpace the defence from 40 metres
for Foster to add the extras and a 15-3 lead. A period of midfield play
ensued with Hornsea kicking a further penaly after 27 minutes, for
Otliensians to again return to the attack from the restart with the same
midfield move allowing Woods to score in the right hand corner this time
after 30 minutes, a half time score of 20-6 was no more than Otliensians
deserved, but encouraging signs were there for the second half.
Otliensians pressed from the off and forced a 5 metre scrum on the right
hand side, excellent work by the front row of Bonner, Lyons and Bougham made
sure that Arbuckle at 8 could pick up for Birch to force his way over,
Foster again successfully adding the extras. The home pack were now on top
with Hanogue, Tom O'Donnell and Hill winning the contact areas, and on 55
minutes after a series of punishing pick and drives, Otliensians won
consecutive line outs and scrums for Arbuckle to again break for the
supporting Markus Keinhorst to release Woods on the right for his hat trick
after 55 mins, Foster converting again. Hornsea tried to use their backs,
but every attack was thwarted by the excellent Otliensians defence, and when
they tried to use their pack the same fate awaited with the home sides
outstanding organisation holding sway.
Otliensians went in to the final 15 minutes detremined to add to their
superiority and scored four more tries, the first for Foster after the
Hornsea scrum had been disrupted for the alert Duggan to pick up and release
him, the second by Nick Keinhorst who interceted on the left to sprint 75
metres down the touchline outflanking all the chasing defenders, the third
from a quick line out by Birch and Foster had released Markus Keinhorst to
the posts and the fourth on 80 minutes going to Duggan, after a break out
from the home 22 metre line from Woods was carried on by Rushfirth who fed
the eager Duggan to score by the posts, with Foster adding a further two
conversions another league victory was achieved.
The next two weeks are crucial to the promotion battle, with back to back
fixtures against third placed Bramley, firstly away and these games will go
some way to confirming whether this will finally be Otliensians time to take
the step up the league ladder.
