In
1998, the Home Office Crime Prevention Agency
published research into the theft of Light Commercial
Vehicles (LCV's). The purpose of this
research was to identify the extent of LCV theft
nationally and to gain a greater understanding of
how when and where such thefts occur.
The
study revealed that in a 12 month period, 47,181
incidents of theft occurred in England, Scotland
& Wales.
It was
further discovered that businesses lost
£152,000,000 of assets as a result of these
thefts - this is not taking into account
other associated costs such as increased insurance
premiums, loss of business, etc.
The
"Police Research Group" said in the
report...
"LCV
Owners should ensure that their vehicles are
adequately secured. The fact that a theft can have
a significant effect on a business shows that many
owners cannot afford to run insecure vehicles,
even if the initial outlay may appear expensive"
The
report shows too, that 75% of all the thefts
analysed consisted of just 8 models! The Volkswagen
LT had the highest rate
of theft among panel vans! {The Mercedes
Sprinter shares the same door/lock mechanism!}
Another
very interesting discovery in the research was
that around a quarter of all the thefts related to
vehicles working in the Construction Industry. The
next largest group of business sectors were the
Manufacturing, Hire/Lease and Retail companies
which accounted for over 25% of the thefts.

One
of the most interesting sections of the report was
the Vehicle Security section which looks at
which levels of security were fitted to the
vehicles at the time of theft. This would
indicate the effectiveness of the security.

These
figures suggest that certain security devices
have been virtually ineffective against theft
attacks and of course, having no security at all
results in the highest occurrences of theft. Note
that the total of the above percentage figures
exceed 100% because some of the vehicles affected
by theft were fitted with more than device.
The
average value of the vehicle contents contained
within this survey was £1752, although one LCV
contained £35,000 worth of equipment!
