They can be 30ft high and since there is only one entrance to the citadels slaves the chieftains must have led somewhat isolated lives. Who knows ? The population of Chan Chan was about 50,000 allegedly. Seems a low figure for the economic wealth needed to build a city in adobe this size. I don't know though, look at Stonehenge.
