About three miles SE from Trujillo, the Huaca (revered monument) del Sol was the largest adobe pyramid, used for administrative purposes, by the Moche civilisation. The Huaca de la Luna was a religious adobe pyramid. Between the two and presently being excavated was the settlement. The visitor's centre is built to resemble the Moche habitations. The civilisation flourished in about 500 to 800ace. The site is about 3 miles from the sea and next to a holy mountain, the Cerro Blanco.
