The Moche would have built canals and irrigation canals in what is now a dry dusty desert. Not least because to make the million mud bricks needed to build these Huacas, water is required in quite large quantities. Although the bricks might have been made by the banks of the canals, the huge decorative plasterwork surfaces need mud onsite. There must have been much more water down there once. The Spaniards diverted the Moche river to try and wash away the Huaca del Sol to find graves so it is a bit melted. Cerro Cabras in distance
