These self contained citadels needed fresh water. This main reservoir is fed from springs, themselves fed by Andes meltwater. This one is about 8 metres at its deepest, silted up, and still has a continuous inflow which would flood the site if it was not piped off through two pipes to the Pacific. The water table has also dropped in recent times.
